‘Forget Me Not’ Exhibition

‘FORGET ME NOT’ CALABASH ART INSTALLATION

These last few weeks we have been excitedly working on a really special project for an art exhibition directed by an artist and dear friend to the Aketekete family, @ulladeventer.

Aketekete had the privilege to be part of the recent Art Exhibition at the German Residence in Accra on the December 10, 2022. Following the theme, “How are we? Who are you?” we aimed to share the message of continuity and sustainability with an art installation named “Forget Me Not”.

As part of our creative process and our interest in craftsmanship, we decided to work with calabash; grown in Togo and Niger, and sourced in Ghana from local dealers. All fifty-three lamps, handcrafted and curated by Nana Kow and Maria, were designed and produced for the event using different processes: calabash chaff cleaning, drilling, sandpaper polishing, painting, and installing.

More than 150 hours of patience, craftsmanship, learning, and excitement.

Thank you to everyone who passed by, took some time to look at our work, sat down the tree, met new people, and felt the experience of the whole event. Seeing you all captivated by the immensity of the Plumeria tree and admiring our work just made our installation a reality.

We couldn’t have imagined it another way.

Special thanks to Ulla for trusting us and giving us this opportunity.
To the German Ambassador Daniel Krull and his team for giving us the space.
And to Rojeh for being able to produce such a special event.

Also, thanks to all our friends and family who support us to continue dreaming.

A big hug from us to you.

The Aketekete Team
